The cost for fuel used is charged at the end of your holiday. The larger vessels use on average between 150 and 200 ltrs of fuel for a standard weekly cruise (return trip: Inverness to Banavie and back again). The smaller vessels (Eriskay, Isle of Skye and Mull of Kintyre) use approximately 100-120 ltrs of fuel on average in a weekly hire. On arrival, when you check in to collect your boat, we will ask for a credit card pre-authorisation of £500 with the final fuel & security deposit account to be completed at the end of your holiday. We just need to check-over the vessel thoroughly before we can finalise the account, this may only be possible a few hours after your departure. Please also see our Terms & Conditions of Hire (condition 12: Fuel & Security Deposit).
In accordance with government guidelines the fuel rate applicable is a 60/40 split. This means that 60% is charged at standard road fuel rates and 40% is charged at red diesel rates.
Included as part of the hire cost is the Collision Damage Waiver, this mean you have fully comprehensive cover in the event of accidental loss or damage to your boat, its equipment, or if you accidently damage for example another vessel or jetty etc or injure a third party (£5 million limit on liability cover).
However, this does not cover any damage caused by the deliberate or negligent act or omission of you or any member of your party (including where the person concerned is under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any similar substance) or any failure by you to comply with our safety instructions or booking conditions. In this case we reserve the right to make a charge to cover the full costs involved in loss or damage.
Additional charges will be applied if the vessel is returned late, dirty or for any other reason as detailed in our Terms & Conditions of Hire.
Non-smoking policy - Smoking is not permitted on board any of our vessels (including enclosed canopy areas on deck). We will apply a £200 charge if, on return, it is evident people have been smoking inside and the vessel smells of smoke.
Please note: A canal fee will apply for all reservations: full details here.
Pick-up and return time for all vessels
Arrival time on first day of hire: 12-14:00
Your vessel will usually be ready for boarding sometime between 12.30pm and 2pm - although the first Skipper and crew briefings start from midday (12:00). These last for about 30-40 min. and we do as many safety briefings as necessary from midday onwards. We require as many crew members as possible (incl. skipper) for the first part of our instructions, and for the second part (practical) the skipper and at least 1 other adult must be present.
Please note that we cannot hand over a vessel without prior instructions. It is important that you inform the boat yard as early as possible of any delays or if your arrival is likely to be after 2pm on the first day of your holiday.
Should your arrival be after 18:00 on the first day of your holiday it may not be possible to spend the first night on your hired vessel and you may have to book alternative accommodation and arrive at our base the next morning. Please contact us to discuss if you think this may be the case. Our boat yard is closed on Sundays.
Return time on last day of hire: 08:30 (am)
All boats must be returned by 8:30am and vacated by 9am on the last day of hire. Many visitors return to the boat yard the prior evening to pack and to visit Inverness.
Payment terms - In order to confirm your booking we require an initial payment of £180 per week (minimum deposit £180). Your balance payment is due 8 weeks before the hire is due to commence.
We accept the following methods of payment:
Debit Card - This may be made over the phone or through SagePay via a secure server on our website. There is no fee for paying with your debit card.
Credit Card (Mastercard & Visa) - This may be made over the phone or through SagePay via a secure server on our website. A 2.5% processing fee is applicable for credit card payments.
Bank Transfer - Our bank details are available on request if you would like to settle payments due by bank transfer. Please note that transfers from foreign banks may attract additional bank charges which must be paid for by the payer or may be charged.
Cheque - Unfortunately we are unable to accept cheques.
Cancellation - For early bookings we guarantee you an unconditional refund of the money you have paid, if - before 15th January (in the year the booking will take place) - you have to cancel (for any reason) a holiday booked to be taken from the end of March of that year onwards.
If you have to cancel after 15th January a charge will be applicable (minimum charge equals deposit) therefore we recommend you have a cancellation insurance policy in place at the time of booking. You must telephone us immediately if you have to cancel and on the same day send us written confirmation (email is acceptable). See Condition 6 in our Terms & Conditions for cancellation fees applicable.
At our discretion and subject to availability we may be able to transfer your booking to an alternative date. The hire charge applicable to the new dates or boat class will then be applicable.
Bookings - Many of the larger vessels such as Kintail, Torridon, Strathspey, Highland Monarch and Balmoral class do book up to 12 months in advance therefore we do recommend you book these as early as you can, to avoid disappointment.
Short Break Holidays - Most boat classes can be booked for a short break cruise, from either Fri 12-14:00 until Mon 8:30am (3 nights) or from Mon 12-14:00 until Fri 8:30am (4 nights).
10-/11-nights holidays - Most boat classes can be booked for 10/11 night holidays, starting on Fri (10 nights) or Mon (11 nights). From Fri 12-14:00 until Mon 8:30am or from Mon 12-14:00 until Fri 8:30am. The depoist required for bookings of more than 1 week is £360.
Group Bookings - Please note that we cannot accept bookings for Stag and Hen parties.
Pets - Pets are permitted on most vessels. 1 boat of the Balmoral class and 1 boat of the Eriskay class will be pet free vessels. Kintail and Torridon are also pet-free.
The cost is currently £50 per pet, per week (min. charge £50). The pet charge is not pro rata, i.e. a booking of more than 1 week incurs an additonal weekly pet charge per pet. Payment to be applied at the time of booking. We kindly ask our customers to bring pet blankets or baskets and to ensure that the pets do not lie on the bedding or seating. We reserve the right to make an extra charge if additional cleaning is required or if damage to any of the vessels fixtures and fittings occurs.
No licence or previous boating experience required. Safety briefings and instructions provided on 1st day of hire.
Fishing - For information about fishing within the cruising area, please refer to the information provided on the Scottish Canals website. Caley Cruisers does not issue fishing permits.

The costs are currently £45 per bike, per week or £30 per bike for a short break. We also have limited availability for children’s bikes (24"; suitable for 8-10 yr old) available currently for £35 per week or £20 for a short break. Bike hire is payable with balance of hire.
