Fort Augustus

Fort Augustus, with its flight of 5 locks and historic Benedictine Abbey, is one of the most picturesque stops along the canal. The Abbey has recently been developed into apartments and cottages for sale and rent so if you’re looking for a second home and have some spare change...!

The lock flight takes about 1 hour to negotiate so it’s important to make sure you allow plenty of time and arrive well in advance. There is plenty of transit berthing available at the top and bottom of the flight. British Waterways have toilet and shower facilities at both locations, the bottom block also has a laundry facility.

There are plenty of shops to top up supplies; these include a butcher, small food stores, newsagent, gift shops and a petrol station.

The Fort Augustus Tourist Information Centre is located in the main car park in Fort Augustus. They will assist with any enquiries you may have and provide you with local maps.
