Banavie

The top of Neptune's Staircase at Banavie is the cruising limit. It is a pleasant village by the Caledonian Canal, about 3 miles from Fort William town centre. The scenery around Banavie is exceptional with Ben Nevis dominant in the skyline.

Banavie is best known for the eight locks known as Neptune’s Staircase. The locks were built in the early 1800’s as part of the Caledonian Canal, which opened in 1847 and was planned by Thomas Telford. They descend a height of 19.5 metres in a horizontal distance of 457 meters and take ninety minutes for a boat to pass through.

It's a nice walk or cycle from Banavie into Fort William via Caol village, or visa versa.

Sights & Walks

Neptune’s Staircase - Loch Linnhe Towpath & return - A canal side walk that takes approximately 1 hour.

Banavie - Tor Castle walk - This 1.5 mile walk is the perfect way to take in some of the most stunning countryside in the Highlands without having to trek for hours.
The walk starts on the canal bank in Banavie and takes walkers past Neptune’s Staircase, Tor Castle Farm and onto the ruined Tor Castle, which was once occupied by the Cameron clan.
From the ruins there are unparalleled views of Loch Lochy, a large fresh water loch stretching 10 miles long and one mile wide.

The Lochy - This bar and restaurant is located only 300 yards from Neptune’s Staircase. Serving a good range of snacks and meals through the day, with very generous portions. They also have an outside beer garden for use in the summer months and an option for takeaway food.
